In the 1770s, many flag designs were created and evaluated as potential symbols for the newly formed United States. One, however, stood out to the commissioning founders as best capturing the patriotism and young history of their just birthed nation. It is generally referred to as the “Betsy Ross” flag, and the story goes she was asked to sew a design provided to her by George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross (her uncle by marriage). Betsy was an upholster by training but gladly attempted the project to help make up for business lost because of the war. The flag was well received by all. The red and white strips suggesting the blood and bandages of the lives sacrificed, and the 13 stars reflecting the original colonies stirred the patriot’s heart. I want to honor this banner and excite my collectors with this depiction of our American standard. Set it in Boston, I hope the backdrop serves my purposes, retells the story of the Revolution and reignites the love of country for all. “We the people” are powerful words, and our flag captures that power majestically.
